Biancamaria Scarcia Amoretti, graduated in 'Lingue e Civilta Orientali' (1963) at the Istituto Orientale (Naples), is professor of Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Human Sciences in Rome University 'La Sapienza' where she developed her career; assistant (1967), associate professor (1971), professor (1976 to now).
Her scientific production tackles many topics concerning the medieval and contemporary Muslim world in the field of history and history of religions. In particular, her work deals with the problem of minorities inside islam, like shiism (and, therefore, Iran has a special place in her researches), and the question of women, considered a significant 'case study' of the relationship between majority and minority. Another subject of interest is the intertwining of religion and politics that characterizes islam. On these three main focuses, the following books, which are meant for a wide audience, are worth mentioning: Tolleranza e guerra santa nell'islam, Firenze 1974; Il mondo dell'islam (transl. also in French and Arabic), Roma 1981 (2nd ed. 1988); Sciiti nel mondo, Roma 1994; Il mondo musulmano: quindici secoli di storia, Roma 1998 (2001, 2005); Un altro Medio Evo: il quotidiano nell'islam, Bari 2001.
